Agnes and I rated a number of common kinds of nuts according to our preferences.  It should be noted that although most of these are a good source of protein, they almost all also have too much fat to eat often.

Here were the entries:

And our ratings:

  Bernard Agnes
Tier 1 peanuts and pistachios pistachios and almonds
Tier 2 almonds and cashews peanuts and chestnuts
Tier 3 hazelnuts and chestnuts hazelnuts and brazil nuts
Tier 4 walnuts and brazil nuts cashews and walnuts

While I rated peanuts as a Tier 1 nut, the rating should really be more complex: it depends on the kind of peanut.  For instance, a Farmer Brand peanut (which is grown in the Shandong region of China) is definitely Tier 1, but a Planters dry-roasted peanut is barely a Tier 1.  Ballpark peanuts fall into Tier 2.  Redskin peanuts and honey roasted peanuts are Tier 3.  Most peanuts sold by street vendors are stale, and therefore Tier 4.  Also, I guess it should be noted that peanuts are legumes, not nuts.

Agnes doesn't make these distinctions.
